A brilliant video - thank you. I'm new in so I'm working my way through your back catalogue. I have an Eastar Maple as you reviewed here, I agree it's surprisingly good. I'd tried a couple of other wooden cheapies but the Eastar clearly stood out as better. That said, I did find it slightly low in pitch. I would come up to pitch if played really hard but I consistently had the weird feeling when picking up the Eastar after playing my Tenor - it just sounded a bit flat. So I bunged it in the lathe and removed 2mm from the head and now it's tuned perfectly and agrees with my Tenor, my piano and my Yamaha recorder.

Oohhhhh, so I have about 10 recorders, i tried playing a piece with choir and could not get the pitch. Brought a couple more from home including my lovely wood and even the treble and sopranino. No good. Played them all using the pitch app and yes, about a semitone “out”. Narrowed it down to 416hz on the app. Figured the pitch was different in recorders for some weird reason. Now you have explained it, just my bad luck that every recorder I own is in baroque. I guess now i have to buy myself a modern 440hz recorder or three.

Hmmm, that’s interesting! Do you kind sharing what make your recorders are? Baroque recorders tend to be much rarer as they are typically handmade, or at least come at a higher price point. Buying 10 would set you back at least $5000..! Unless I’m misunderstanding?

@@Team_Recorder I haven’t bought any new at all. Most are plastic, two wooden, all mixed brands. But all pitch to A at 416. I live in Australia if that makes a difference.

Sarah, maybe you’ll know this! Why don’t some older alto or basset recorders have a low f sharp key? I have two otherwise beautiful sounding old instruments from Mollenhauer (alto) and Kung (bass) and both have only a single low F key. No F sharp. Why did they leave out this key on some recorders? Thanks! david

Nice! Nothing to add as far as duets are concerned but I would like to recommend Phil Woods Sonata For Alto Sax And Piano on recorder. I've been playing through the 1st movement as written for alto sax and it sits almost perfectly on recorder and sounds beautiful. The piano would need transposing/arranging to suit. There are versions by John Harle ( a good template for recorder i feel ) and Victor Morosco (who Woods wrote the piece for) on UA-cam. The last piece in your book put me in mind of this.

❤ You two are soooo cute together! My almost equally cute spouse taught me to play recorder nearly 47 years ago, shortly after we married. We’ve been playing beautiful (and not so beautiful) music together ever since. (Alas, no matching fish 🐠 shirts.) I started as a piano player; he plays piano and a bunch of woodwinds plus recorder. We began with the easier pieces (including especially great arrangements by Eric Katz) and graduated to the Quantz piece you and Jon played today - that one’s a BEAR! Thanks to his computer technical and music theory skills, he’s transcribed countless pieces for us! The ultra-clever spousal unit has expanded our repertoire to be-bop, other jazz, and sundry other music written by composers who never dreamed of having their pieces played on recorder. So cool to have these! P.S. One of my favorite method books is The Charlton Method of the Recorder Paperback - July 10, 2015 by Andrew Charlton (Amazon: www.amazon.com/Charlton-Method-Recorder-Andrew/dp/1908904798). A serious student can play Charlton forever and never outgrow it - always some new technical skills to squeeze out. Plus the book includes some really fun duets.

What about the bass recorder? I noticed your recorders didn't have those extensions valve for the hole you can't reach with your pinky? Very informative video. I believe the recorder is the most under appreciated instrument. However, being that it's not confusing enough having to read while playing in a different key, I think the Alto and Tenor recorder should be played using the Alto and Tenor clef respectively.😅 why not? The viola uss the Alto clef and the cello and some other instruments occasionally use the Tenor clef?😊
